Harvesting!

 -on

Because our high harvest days are also our time sensitive, fast pace days, they aren’t the best time to teach new harvesters; so because of that, we have designed a workshop that will take your young growers through the ways in which we harvest a variety of different vegetables!

During the workshop your youth will first sit through a brief demonstration where we will show them multidimensional diagrams of each plant demonstrating: what we are going to harvest that day; which leaves and/or parts we are going to cut, which parts we keep, and which leaves or fruit we might want to remove and why. It is here that they will first have a chance to mimic, and get comfortable with, the harvesting process for each item before they head out into the field to harvest.

Option 1!

In order to reduce the potential waste of harvesting for the sake of teaching only, your group will have 2 options!...

Reduce Waste!

The First! Each child/student gets to take home the items they have harvested, the cost of which is covered within your workshop fee. Each student will take home roughly $500 pesos worth of produce split into $100 peso packs or a larger number of $50 peso packs each of a different vegetable depending on what items are available for harvest.

Option 2!

The second! Your organization can decide that you want to Harvest for Hunger, and each child/student will be lovingly harvesting and preparing a veggie pack worth $500 pesos that they can then donate to a person in need.

Best of Both Worlds?

Want to do both?! or want to do more?!

You can always up the veggie pack value, or ask us how we can help prepare additional staple items (plantain, banana, batata, gourds etc) that can be added to each pack when your group’s harvesting workshop is done so that their gift goes even further.

Learn about soil types and the composition of soil through a series of fun hands-on activities. Then we take that knowledge and explore its relationship to compost, by making a pile together and exploring the layers and inputs it takes to arrive at our ideal soil quality.

Next, we break off into small teams and set off on a farm-wide treasure hunt, magnifying glass in hand, to see if the students can locate these bugs or gather proof that they have been hanging around.

Finally, teams return to present their findings and we  talk about some ways that we can organically try to prevent the bad, and attract the good to help keep our farm in balance & bellies fed.

Learn about the different bugs that frequent our farm and farms around the world: see them; learn the way they either help or harm our farm; how to identify them; clues that they might be around; and the plants they prefer to hang around.
